Soul II Soul’s Melissa Bell Passes Away Aged 53

Melissa Bell, former vocalist with popular R&B group Soul II Soul, has passed away aged 53. The singer died on Monday 28th August, as confirmed by her daughter and X Factor star Alexandra Burke.

Active since the late-eighties, Bell eventually found mainstream success with Soul II Soul in the early-nineties, singing on some of the group’s hit singles, including ‘Wish’ (1993) and ‘Be a Man’ (1995). After a short stint with the group, the singer left to pursue a solo career, releasing occasional singles up until 2009.

“We will never forget her unconditional love, support, charisma, strength and courage throughout her life. We are eternally proud & thankful to call her our mummy,” wrote Burke on Twitter, before adding: “Mummy has always been my biggest support and was over the moon when I told her I was doing Strictly. It was always a dream of hers that I would one day be part of the show…”

No further information is known at this time.

Bell’s family has requested that people “respect our privacy at this difficult time.”
